Happy 4th Year Anniversary

TIME FLIES... Eyebrows and I have been together for 4 years!!! Looking back I realize that so much has changed. We've grown and matured and moved a few steps closer to our personal goals and dreams -- and we could not have done it without each other.

Our relationship is one that allows each other to seek and reach our dreams, but also sets reasonable boundaries to protect each other from falls. Its been a challenge finding middle ground, but through time we've grown in love and trust and I believe learned to find the balance that suits us both.

Our love is strong and stable, simple and natural. I have never felt more fulfilled and secure. Eyebrows really is my partner, and I am a better person because of him.

Cebu Ocular - Hilton and Plantation Bay

HILTON and PLANTATION BAY

Maybe for a vacation... Not our weddingAugust 8, 2009

We checked out a few other venues for a Mactan wedding, the Hilton and Plantation Bay. The Hilton had a pretty garden and beach front that makes for a great beach party. Its got a Plan B (the ballroom), which looks a bit old and run down. Plus the whole building looks like a pink flamingo!!! No thanks...

Hilton: The beach and garden front

Hilton: The ballroom, I guess circles are said to be lucky? LOL

Hilton: Reception Area. Maybe if my theme was pink?

Plantation Bay is -- well, cool!! Gives you this feeling of being in a surreal environment. Eyebrows loves it, I think it plays with his graphic novel imagination. We'd go back for a trippy trip, but not for an elegant wedding.

Plantation Bay: Sample outdoor wedding ceremony

Plantation Bay: Sample outdoor wedding reception

Plantation Bay: The plan B, but a little too small for 300 guests, dont you think?

Cebu Ocular - Microtel

MICROTEL MACTAN
Awesome Lodging at a Bargain!
August 8, 2009

We fell in love with Shang Mactan. Its beautiful – and like most things beautiful, it comes at a price. Lodging is quite pricey at the Shang, and Im not sure that guests would be willing to pay PhP8,000 for a night (although if its youre first time in Mactan, I’d highly recommend it). We would have thrown the beautiful, almost-perfect venue out the window if not for our unplanned discovery.

Just a couple of kilometers from the Shang is Microtel. Quite honestly, I never really had a good impression about Microtel. I imagined an old boutique hotel. Dusty carpets. Musky smelling rooms. Dark. Just... not the type of place you want your guests to stay before your wedding day. BUT... this Microtel changed all that! (Thanks to Barcelon, else we never would have found this place!) Its new, just under a year old. The rooms are clean and bright. Its got a long, white-sand beach front. Its got its own huge pool. Its good good staff, and for good food the Abaca resort is literally next door. But best of all…. Its more than half the price of the Shang!!! (happy happy joy joy!!!) We were pleasantly impressed. THIS MAKES SHANG MACTAN POSSIBLE!!!!

So, here’s a few pictures of Microtel…

The All New Microtel, Mactan! YUP, its new alright!

Its got its own white sand beach front, a large pool and a baby pool (not in picture). Actually considered having the wedding here.

The Deluxe room, if you dont mind sharing you can fit up to 4 people in a room!

The Studio Room, its even got its own kitchen! And the view from the balcony is awesome!

Cebu Ocular - Shangri-La Mactan

SHANGRI-LA MACTAN
August 8, 2009
After a late Friday night, we attempt to get up early for our Saturday ocular meetings. Thankfully, Barce was nice enough to offer to take us around with their driver which on retrospect saved us a lot of headache! You see cabs and tricycles don’t seem as easy to find around Mactan Island. So it would have been horrible jumping from resort to resort without a ride.

Our first meeting was at Shangri-La Mactan – and we were impressed the moment we set foot on the lobby. The entrance was very open and the overlooking landscaped garden and sea was refreshing. We proceeded with the ocular of 4 venues: the Marquee, Ocean Pavilion, Beach Front and mini-Ballroom / Mactan Ballroom. The Mactan ballroom was under renovation to be completed by September 2009. Below is a summary of the pros and cons of each venue.

Marquee:
1. SIZE (-) - Very large venue, it can probably accommodate 1000 guests and we are only planning on 300. They say they can decorate the venue so it doesn’t look too empty. But then Ive heard of someone who’s had it there and even with the decorations, 300 guests will make the venue look to sparse.
2. LOCATION (-) – Vary far from the Ocean Pavilion, which is where we plan to have our ceremony. Guests cannot possibly walk from the Pavilion to the Marquee, and since most of our guests will not have cars then I can just imagine the logistical nightmare of having it here.
3. TIME (-) – Since it is a tent and not sound proof, we still have the 10:30PM curfew. Not an option.

Ocean Pavilion:

1. VIEW (+) – It’s a perfect cross between and indoor and outdoor venue. The venue is surrounded by glass so you still get an amazing view of the garden and sea.
2. WEATHER (+) - But the place is enclosed to protect us from the heat and the possibility of rain (God forbid…).
3. COCKTAILS (+) – Its got an open garden right beside which makes a perfect place for guests to spill out to and have cocktails after the ceremony
4. SIZE (-) – It can only accommodate 100 guests. This isn’t so bad since we’re not expecting everyone to attend the ceremony
5. SHORT AISLE (-) – I would love for a longer aisle to have our entourage and myself walk on. Wouldn’t that be grander?

Beach Front

1. VIEW (+) - Its got white sands and blue waters, really beautiful. This is
Eyebrows’ ideal venue.
2. LOCATION (+) – Its really near the Pavilion, so guests that attended the ceremony can easily get to the reception
3. FOOD (-) – Food will be served BBQ buffet style but costs double the price of food served in the ballroom. That just doesn’t make sense? What will the BBQ – eat all you cal foie gras?
4. TIME (-) – They’ve got a 10:30PM noise curfew, by 10:30 we still haven’t finished eating! The whole point of a beach wedding is the dancing afterwards, and if we cant have the dancing there then… that’s just disappointing
5. WEATHER (-) – Obviously, it’ll be a huge problem if it gets too hot or too wet.

Mini-Ballroom / Mactan Ballroom
1. LOCATION (+) – Its not as near to the pavilion as the Beach Front, but not as far as the Marquee. Guests should still be able to walk from the ceremony to the reception.
2. FOOD (+/-) – According to our contact, Shang is not able to provide a sit down menu for over 100 guests – really? I imagine it should be possible for the ballroom. Im not convinced that they cant do it. For the price, they ought to be able to.
3. TIME (+) – Since the ballroom is completely indoors, we should be able to party till the sun rises as long as were willing to pay the extra fees
4. WEATHER (+) – Well, it is indoors so rain or super shine it shouldn’t be a problem.
5. VIEW (-) – Although we were not able to see the actual Mactan ballroom (since it was being renovated), we imagine it to be the way all ballrooms look like, elegant and formal. It would just seem like a shame come all the way to Mactan but waste the awesome view. Plus thing is that its newly renovated!

Given all these, we’re thinking of having the ceremony at the OCEAN PAVILION, the cocktails at the GARDEN beside, and the reception at the MACTAN BALLROOM.
In terms of facilities, I am quite impressed… but so far, my experience of their service has been HORRIBLE!!!

1. Our ocular was set on a Saturday, but we arrived of a Friday and thought to have our ocular earlier. I called Shangri-La to see whether this was possible, they informed me that they would call back a few hours later to confirm. I waited the whole day and they never called back.
2. I called 3 days before to set an appointment for the ocular. Upon arriving, I was informed that no one from events was available to tour us. WHAT??? They had someone else entertain us instead.
3. The ocular went well, we were quite satisfied with the venue and requested for additional proposals so we could begin a rough costing. 1 week later – still no proposal! So I called to follow-up. 3 weeks later, still no proposal!!! You call this 5-star service???

Despite the crazy costs, I love the venue and we’re quite set on Shang Mactan. But with this kind of service… Im definitely having second thoughts…

Cebu Ocular - Itenerary and Sights to See

My last "known" weekend in Manila
before the next business trip, I decided to treat Eyebrows to an early birthday present -- a weekend at Cebu! Being annoyingly O.C., I came up with a tentative itinerary of stuff to do. Kinda wanted to take charge of all the planning for once and let Eyebrows just sit back and enjoy the vacation. :)

Couldn't have done this without the help of Barce and Haidee! Thanks guys for the hospitality!!! We absolutely love Cebu!!!

If you're ever planning to go to Cebu, below are the top 5 things I suggest you must do:

1. Eat CNT Lechon, its the BEST LECHON ever!! Its located near SM, taxi drivers should know where to take you. Plus, you can even take home some to Manila! It's still pretty yummy even if you eat it the next day.

2. Eat in ABACA, Mactan -- I suggest for dinner. It's a bit pricey but the food is awesome! (about PhP1-2K/person) There's no need to get all dolled up, but I suggest you do for the fun of it. You can make a date out of it. Taxis may not know where it is: its a few meters from the Hilton and right beside the Microtel hotel.

3. Visit The Terraces in Ayala Mall. Ok, so its just a mall -- but its a pretty place to walk around, eat, have some dessert, coffee or drinks. Our hotel was really close so we went here often.

4. Visit Tops! Just a few minutes away from the city is the mountains! There's a PhP100 entrance but I think its worth the view. They sell beers inside so its a nice place to hang. Bring a jacket cuz its pretty breezy! Come at night to see the skyline.

5. Gotta see the Shang, Macatan. Its beautiful. Bring your bathing suit if you wanna take a dip. Food is great there too!

Anyway, below is our itinerary -- we didnt really follow it to the detail, but it surely helped!

1. Wakey – wakey sleepy head!!!

First, the struggle to wake up – probably have to wake up at around 8:30AM? Have breakfast, take a shower… drag me out of bed… the usual! There is a shuttle in the Ayala mall (which is supposed to be really near our hotel) that can take us to Mactan or we can bug Barce to drive for us. It takes about 1 hour to get there. We’ll figure it out

Time Chart:
8:30AM – Wakey wakey!
10:00AM – leave for Mactan Island

2. Our ocular begins with… Shangri-La Mactan

Our appointment with them is at 11:00AM.

Appointment: 11:00 AM
Address: Punta Engano Road, Lapu-Lapu, Cebu

Then we can have lunch at the Shang, they have a few good restaurants plus it will be an opportunity for us to try their food.

Hotel Information:
Appointment: 2:00PM
Address: Punta Engano Mactan Island, Cebu
Telephone Number: 63-32-492-7777

Address: Marigondon, Mactan Island, Cebu
Telephone Number: 63-32-340 5900
Contact Person: Lain (Account Executive)

Lest we start starving on the way back, we can probably get a light (light lang ha!) snack before we head back. The resort has tons of choices!

5. Back to the city!

So Im thinking we’ll be done by around 6:00PM. Our easiest bet is to have the hotel call us a taxi to bring us back to the city.

6. Freshen up and Hang out!!!

We can go back to the hotel and relax a bit then meet up with Barce – if he’s not already with us – for dinner and drinks!

SUNDAY, August 9, 2009

1. Sunday’s are for chill-axing…

Sunday is our free day!!! There’s a bunch of things to do in Cebu – bahala na si Batman! Some options:

a. Try out funky food - OUT of AFRICA BBQ STEAKHOUSE, Parkmall for Exotic Foods: Crocodile, Ostrich,Wild Boar,Carabao,Turtle, Deer,Lamb,Venison. Kebabs.

b. Try out CEBU LECHON!!! - CNT Lechon for the authentic and the best Cebu Lechon, located outside SM City Cebu. Remember what Filipinos say all the time: The best lechon is from Cebu. The best lechon in Cebu is from CNT.

c. Shopping? Cebu City is well known for two spacious and modern malls outside Manila. SM City Cebu and the Ayala Center Cebu are the most famous and luxurious shopping centers at the heart of the city. Boutique shops, mini-malls, themed malls, fine and alfresco dining include ParkMall, Banilad Town Center, among others.

d. Fuente Rotunda is an especially scenic spot at nights. Many locals hangout here inside the park premises near the fountain. A variety of shops, fastfood chains, a mall, eateries, and restaurants surround the area. Be sure to bring a camera to take a shot where the old style province meets the vibrant and sophisticated urban lifestyle.

e. Fuenta Rotunda is the arguably the center of the city with roads stretching out into different parts of the city. One road leads to General Maxilom Avenue, where most of the Cebu night life exists. Disco bars, coffee shops, comedy bars line this busy avenue with bars opening at around 8pm. They usually close when the last customer leaves.

f. Another stretch from Fuenta Rotunda is the Osmena Blvd. With bars, restaurants, and coffeeshops leading all the way to the Provincial Capitol, which is particularly scenic at night. The Provincial Capitol is by far the largest provincial Capitol building anywhere in the entire archipelago. Its original design is a miniature of the White House and was built during the American Era.

g. Just in one of the roads near Fuenta is Larsian Barbeque. The locals here love and eat and the barbeque in this place is one of the best and the cheapest around the city. The barbeque portions are small so you have enough space to store dessert. Try various kinds of barbequed local delicacies not for the faint of heart: innards, coagulated blood, squid, hotdogs aside from the usual pork and chicken varieties.

h. Just adjacent Robinson's Mall is the Crown Regency Cebu which is the tallest building in the city. Adventure seekers may head to the top floor to experience a breathtaking view of this modern city and its environs. You may also opt to join in the Xtreme Rides that literally puts you on the edge of the city, or you may walk around the edge of the building (don't worry, safety cables are attached) to experience this once in a lifetime experience.

i. Drive by Colon Street, the oldest street of the country and brave the cacophonous traffic for some nice worn out classical buildings dating back to the American Era. At nighttime, this street transforms into a night market with unbelievably good buys here and around everywhere. Be wary of pickpockets though.

j. Just at the end of the street turn a few blocks and you will see the Heritage of Cebu, a massive and particularly detailed monument showcasing nothing else but the heritage of Cebu from the old Spanish to the American colonial era.

k. Head to the Casa Gorordo, a well preserved Spanish Colonial Mansion complete with patio. This house is turned into a museum and it gives a rather detailed view of how the high society lived during the Spanish era.

l. Fort San Pedro is the smallest Spanish Outpost in the Philippines during the colonial era. It features a small museum showcasing the wreckage and treasures from the sunken San Diego Galleon from Mexico. The area, which used to be scenic, is unusually chaotic due to the construction of the Subway section of the Coastal road linking Southern Cebu to the North Reclamation Area.

m. See the Taoist Temple for a unique look at the island's Chinese heritage. The Chinese make up a significant part of the population, with much of the locals having full, half or part Chinese ancestry.

n. Go to Tops, which literally sits at the top of the Mt Busay for an unobstructed view of the entire city at night. A few shops and restaurants stand along the way for a short stop.

o. The historic Magellan's Cross is opposite the Cebu City Hall. This is where the Portuguese conquistador Ferdinand Magellan planted the first wooden cross upon converting the original inhabitants to Christianity. The original cross is nowhere to be found though. Historians say the original wooden cross was made into a firewood by the local inhabitants when the Magellan fleet headed somewhere else. Admire the small unique structure where the replica of the cross is planted. This city icon also has a mural on the ceiling. Take time to appreciate the various candle sellers who dance around during worship and while selling the candles. The very large and old Basilica Minore del Sto. Nino is just on the next street. Cebu Metropolitan Cathedral is a few blocks away.
* Thanks to Wikitravel for the info...

2. Ready to go back home?

Be at the airport around 7:30PM?

Cebu – Manila Flight:
Departure: 9:05pm
Arrival: 10:20pm
Airline: Cebu Pacific
Flight: 5J 578

From the hotel, we take a taxi to the airport.

The Perfect Wedding Ring

August 2009

Found this perfect wedding ring when I was in Australia, tried it on and it really suited my engagement ring. Thing is, I wasn't able to take a picture. Best I can do is describe... its a slender white gold band, shiny like my engagement ring. Its got 5 maybe 6 dainty diamonds (maybe .5 ct, or less?). The diamonds are set in between thin white gold borders. The diamonds are all the same size, but the setting makes it look like the middle diamonds are larger than the corner ones. Its because the gap between the borders is wider in the middle than in the corners. Its quite pretty -- I think its the one :)

La Union Ocular - Thunderbird

THUNDERBIRD RESORTS, LA UNION

August 2, 2009

Even before I got engaged, maybe even before I knew Eyebrows, I imagined a Greek wedding. Now that I think about it, maybe not so much for the Greek theme, but for the elegance and free-spirit atmosphere it gives. So, when I came across this new resort in La Union, we just had to check it out! It's a secluded, mini Santorini in our very own coast.

To our pleasant surprise, Thunderbird was amazing. It's secluded. It's private. It looks very elegant. It's by the beach. It has its very own new and well-kept golf course. The rooms are classy. The Greek theme is very well played off.

But... there are a few big "buts". La Union is a 6 hour drive (minimum). Ok, I could have lived with that. Rooms are pricey. Well, we found a few cheap resorts nearby, so that solves that. But there are "buts" that I cant live with. (1) They dont seem to have enough staff to have a sit-down dinner. Maybe even not enough to check in more than 100 guests at the same time. And (2), there is no viable plan B. Being by the coastline, winds can get pretty strong and even the biggest tent just wont cut it.

Conclusion, it could have been perfect. We're definitely coming back, not for our wedding though.

Baguio Ocular - Camp John Hay

CAMP JOHN HAY / THE MANOR
August 1, 2009

Next stop was... lunch! Yup, Eyebrows cannot not have lunch at 12nn. Do you really wanna see a tantrum on your wedding ocular? hehehe :) According to Gobs, food is awesome at the Manor! We stop by Le Chef and have something to eat -- YUM YUM YUM! The french onion soup is to crave for!!!

After a filling and satisfying lunch, we're ready to get back to work! We get in touch with Lovely of The Manor -- and I get the most disappointing reply. "There is an event at the convention and I cannot accomodate you now." WHAT???? You see, I called Lovely a few days ago to set an appointment for an ocular. She agrees. We drive to Baguio. Then she's not free???? No way. After a fairly easy reasoning, she agrees to see us. We met. She was nice and I got over the misunderstanding quite easily.

The Manor is a pretty place, Le Chef (the restaurant) specifically and the garden and ampitheatre. Unfortunately, Le Chef was no longer available. And the garden and ampitheatre, although stunning was prone to bad weather. Our plan B would be the convention center, which was... I hate to admit, a horrible plan B. The kind of plan B that would make you want to cry if it rains. It was exactly what it is - a convention center. Disappointingly, CJH quickly fell out of my list.

With the only two venues out of the way, we head to the pasalubong must of Baguio -- Good Shepherd! I buy my favorite ube jam and some stuff for the fam, and we head back to BCC for a relaxing night and awesome pig-out tepanyaki dinner!

Baguio Ocular - Baguio Country Club

BAGUIO COUNTRY CLUB

July 31 - August 1, 2009

Driving to Baguio on a pay day Friday -- not the best idea. The long ride turned out to be a loooooooooooooooong ride! Felt like most of our weekend was spent in the car, but like all road trips, the company makes up for the distance. From 3PM - 10PM, we drive all the way up to Baguio -- through rain and fog and desperate bathroom breaks we make it to the top. I must admit, the way up was beautiful! For a few kilometers, the new SCTEX fools you to believing you are in another country (that's according to Eyebrows, cuz apparently, I slept through it... boo). Added plus, you get to see the BIGGEST RESTAURANT IN THE WORLD! According to Eyebrows -- it'll show up if you wiki it! Whatever. But I agree, its a must see :)

Baguio holds a special place for Eyebrows and I as kids. For Eyebrows its out of town memories with the golf crew and bonding with his Dad over a good round of golf. It's a reminder of family time and fun, relaxing, and chill times. For me Baguio is memories of my Dad, of plums and strawberries at the Hyatt and riding Princess my horse around CJH. Its distinct reminders of my family when it was just Dad, Mom and I. Anyway...... enough memories down childhood lane...

Next day -- Saturday was Baguio ocular day! After a awesome breakfast of tiny fluffy pancakes (yum yum!), we head down to the events office of BAGUIO COUNTRY CLUB.

Wedding Ceremony: If the weather permits there's a beautiful putting green overlooking a ridge of trees where you can get married. Its quaint and gives off a very "woody" feel. And, theres a decent plan B. If it rains, not all is lost.

Wedding Cocktails: The ballroom has a receiving room that can act as the registration as well as the cocktail area. Its quite close to the ceremony location and is in decent condition. Only thing I dont really like is that it's looks a bit old fashioned. Doesnt really go with the elegant romantic theme I envision. But considering all factors. this is the current top 1 of all the places we've visited.

Wedding Reception: The only place they had was the ballroom. It's newly renovated so in good condition. Lot's of wood -- and huge top to bottom glass windows! Beautiful actually! It looked very "earthy". Only thing was... it had these antlers for chandeliers. Ummmm... yeah, gotta find a way to hide those.

Lodging: The top seller of this place was the lodging. Just across the street was an array of cabins for rent! And at the very peak, was a newly developed cabin -- modern and still smelling of fresh wood! We could just imagine renting cabins for all our guests and enjoying the company!!!

All in all, BCC was a possible workable choice. Far -- yes, but fun nonetheless! Gotta admit though, I wasnt 100% about it. But it held its spot somewhere at the top.
